On the Sparrow led worship monthly at Fellowship Denver Church. Coming together in January 2017, the band was characterized by a stripped-down acoustic sound that places an emphasis on vocal harmonies.
“On the Sparrow” was named for the 1905 hymn, “His Eye is On the Sparrow” by lyricist Civilla D. Martin. Martin initially found inspiration for the song after a visit with friends who , despite constant affliction, knew they were loved and seen by their Heavenly Father. Further rooted in scripture, the hymn expands on Matthew chapters 6 and 10, which compare God’s profound care for His smallest creatures to an even greater love for us, His children. In a transient city like Denver, it can be easy to feel isolated and insignificant. Through song, On the Sparrow seeks to connect people to the God who sees and knows them, drawing upon the theme of its namesake. As Martin wrote, “His eye is on the sparrow and I know He cares for me.”
